Phased Array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is an advanced method of ultrasonic testing. Phased array ultrasonic method can reveal defects embedded in the material that cannot be easily resolved with conventional ultrasonic testing. 

The phased array probe consists an array of number of small ultrasonic transducers each of which can be pulsed individually. Ultrasonic phased array systems can potentially be employed in almost any test where conventional ultrasonic flaw detectors have traditionally been used.

Weld inspection and crack detection are the most important applications, and these tests are done across a wide range of industries including aerospace, power generation, petrochemical, metal billet and tubular goods suppliers, pipeline construction and maintenance, structural metals, and general manufacturing.


Phased arrays can also be effectively used to profile remaining wall thickness in corrosion survey applications. The ultrasonic beam is swept like a search-light through the object being examined, and the data from multiple beams are put together to make a visual image showing a slice through the object. This gives phased array testing the ability to inspect critical applications faster then conventional ut bay scanning multipule angles in one scan.

The use of multiple probe elements produce a steerable, focused, high-resolution beam. Compared to conventional ultrasonic testing, Phased Array ultrasonic testing instruments and probes are complex and expensive and requires highly trained, skilled and experienced technicians.
